Ankylosis is defined as a fusion of cementum or dentin with alveolar bone. The failure of tooth eruption due to ankylosis may cause loss of contact point, drift of adjacent teeth and open bite.
The purpose of this report is to describe the long term effect of posterior open bite due to ankylosed teeth in a growing patient.
This patient presented with bilateral posterior open bite. Prior treatment history included the use of subluxation and orthodontic traction to resolve a left sided posterior open bite 4 years ago. This problem recurred due to re-ankylosis of the teeth on the left side. The right sided open bite was the result of both maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth¡¯s secondary retention.
During subluxation and orthodontic treatment of ankylosed teeth in a growing patient, the clinician should consider the possibility of re-ankylosis and recurrence of treated open bite. And in a multiple ankylosis case, the clinician should consider the possibility of other teeth¡¯s secondary retention also.
